QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School diploma or its equivalency;
  2. AA Degree or 60 semester hours, work towards Bachelor degree.
  3. Must pass background check and a valid Fingerprint clearance card issued through Arizona Department of Public Safety.
  4. Must be literate in the Native American and English languages. Successfully demonstrates the proper use of both the Native American and English languages.
  5. Must have passed Native American Language Proficiency test
  6. Must acquire Native American Language Teaching Certificate through Arizona Department of Education. And continue college coursework in the field of education towards a degree.
  7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Director of Native American Studies and Building Principal

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months per school calendar year

JOB GOAL: To develop a child holistically through language and culture using the Empowering Values of the Native American and the personal foundations of learning

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

These comprehensive duties have been designed as the paraprofessional areas of teaching in or school district. The Native American Language Teacher will perform these duties under the direct supervision of the Director of Native American Studies and the building Principals.

  1. Organize and teach lessons in Native American Language development and Culture across the curriculum.
  2. Develop instructional materials used in the classroom for language and culture.
  3. Evaluate student progress and adjusts instruction accordingly.
  4. Test students for Native American language dominance.
  5. Plans and implements team teaching strategies with the classroom teachers.
  6. Participates in appropriate trainings set up by the school district, including but not limited to language acquisition workshops.

 

7.Responsibilities as a Native American Language Teacher:

  • Enters grade onto report cards
  • Keeps an inventory of books, supplies, furniture, etc.
  • Orders supplies for classroom use.
  • Takes proper care of audio-visual equipment assigned to classroom.
  • Files student’s work as needed.
  • Prepares and duplicates own instructional materials.
  • Obtains and prepares attractive classroom displays and presentations.
  • Monitors students on/off school campus during school affiliated activities.
  • Handles routine classroom management.
  • Performs school duties as assigned.

8.The Native American Language Teacher will complete a minimum of 6 college credits toward a teaching degree during the school year, pursuant to the guidelines of the district’s language and culture program and various funding agencies.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provision of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
